API 570 / Requirements guide

API 570 eligibility and requirements

Eligibility for API 570 is decided by API, not by a preparation platform. The published criteria combine education with relevant piping experience, and your application is measured against them. This page explains how to read those criteria and assemble the evidence behind them. It cannot tell you whether you qualify: only API answers that.

On this page
  1. Read the eligibility criteria
  2. Prepare your application
  3. Choose the right next step

Read the eligibility criteria

API publishes the eligibility criteria for its Individual Certification Programs on api.org, beside the API 570 application itself. Read them there first. The combinations are specific: a given level of education comes with a given minimum of relevant piping experience, and the two always move together.

  • The criteria sit with the API certification programme on api.org.
  • Education and experience are read as a pair, never separately.
  • Experience must be relevant to piping, not general plant time.
  • The version that counts is the one for your exam window.

Prepare your application

The application is a documentation exercise. You declare your education and your experience and you must be able to support both, so the work sits in collecting records before the deadline rather than in the form. Start with whatever takes longest, usually a signature from a former employer.

Submit against the current instructions on api.org and keep a copy of everything. Booking a seat at a Prometric test centre is a separate step that follows approval, with its own rules: treat the application deadline and the appointment as two dates, not one.

Choose the right next step

  1. Respect the order of steps

Confirm eligibility, then budget, then book, then study. Reverse that order and you lose money: a time-limited pass bought well before an approved application is partly spent on waiting. Check the criteria and the current fees on the official pages first.

  2. Let your weakest domains lead

Once your window is set, the Body of Knowledge decides what you study and your weakest domains decide the order. That does not depend on your application status, which is why a diagnostic session is useful while you wait for approval.

If you are not yet eligible#

Not qualifying yet is a planning problem, not a verdict. Two things are worth doing while the experience accumulates: ask your employer to record your piping work in terms that will support a later application, and keep the technical material warm with short sessions rather than a standing start years from now.

Frequently asked questions

What are the API 570 certification requirements?#

API publishes combinations of education and relevant piping experience, with the minimum experience falling as formal education rises. The criteria, and the definitions behind them, are on api.org with the certification programme. Read them there rather than in any summary, including ours.

Do I need an engineering degree?#

No. The published criteria accept several routes, and more years of relevant piping experience take the place of formal study. What they do not accept is experience with no relevance to piping inspection.

Can InspectAhead confirm that I am eligible?#

No, and nobody outside API can. We prepare you for the exam content; eligibility is decided on your application by API. Treat any service that tells you you qualify as a warning sign.

Does a training certificate count?#

Not in the sense the criteria use. Course certificates, including ours, evidence preparation, not education or experience. Keep them, but do not build an application on them.
