Compare the equipment scope
API 570 is the piping inspector certification. Its scope centres on in-service piping systems and the inspection, rating, repair and alteration decisions that apply to them. API 510 is the pressure vessel inspector certification. API 653 is the aboveground storage tank inspector certification. Those labels describe different asset families, not levels in a single ladder.
The programmes share inspection principles such as understanding deterioration, evaluating condition and using referenced codes. That overlap does not make the credentials interchangeable. A rule written for a vessel is not automatically the rule for piping or a storage tank, and the applicable construction, inspection and repair documents differ.
- API 570: in-service piping systems and piping inspection decisions.
- API 510: pressure vessels and the inspection decisions attached to that equipment.
- API 653: aboveground storage tanks and their inspection, repair and alteration scope.
- Each programme has its own official Body of Knowledge and reference set.
Match the certification to your experience
API decides eligibility separately for each certification. Education, the amount and relevance of experience, employer verification and application evidence must be checked against the current official page for the programme you want. A summary cannot decide whether a particular job record qualifies, and requirements may be revised.
Choose a preparation path
Once the scope and eligibility route match, compare the actual syllabus with your daily work. Familiar equipment can still contain unfamiliar calculations, code relationships or exam terminology. Build a diagnostic around the selected Body of Knowledge, then divide the gaps into recall, navigation, calculation and application tasks.
There is no universal order in which to earn these certifications, and none is automatically more valuable or more difficult for every inspector. Employer needs, asset exposure, local market and career direction change the answer. Choose the certification that supports work you can perform and document, then use official sources for the current application details.

Frequently asked questions
Is API 570 higher than API 510 or API 653?#
No. They address different equipment scopes. Treat them as separate certification paths rather than levels in a universal ranking.
Which certification fits piping inspection work?#
API 570 is the piping inspector certification. Confirm that your education and relevant experience meet the current official eligibility criteria before applying.
Can the same experience support more than one application?#
A mixed role may include several asset types, but API evaluates each certification under its own criteria. Document the work and verify the current requirements separately.
Does InspectAhead prepare candidates for API 510 or API 653?#
No. InspectAhead currently prepares for API 570 only. The API 510 and API 653 information here helps readers distinguish scope, not access another product.
