API 510 and API 570 exam preparation

InspectAhead prepares inspection candidates for two API certifications on one platform: API 510 for pressure vessels and API 570 for piping. Both sections work the same way: practice by program domain, timed mock exams, and a debrief that tells you what to revise next.

What each certification covers

The two certifications split in-service inspection by equipment type. The scope, the code edition and the exam structure belong to the certification you sit. The study method does not have to change.

API 510: pressure vessels

API 510 covers the in-service inspection, repair, alteration and rerating of pressure vessels. Candidates work from the code, read inspection and history records, and settle questions about wall thickness, remaining life, test pressure and the conditions under which a vessel may return to service.

It suits inspectors and engineers responsible for vessels in refineries, chemical plants and process units: equipment that is opened, inspected and put back into service.

API 570: piping systems

API 570 covers the in-service inspection and repair of metallic piping systems, the circuits that carry process fluid between equipment. The work turns on circuit identification, corrosion loops, inspection intervals, remaining life and the thickness measurements that decide whether a line stays in service.

It suits piping inspectors and engineers whose scope is the pipe itself: lines, valves and supports, from the unit boundary to the equipment connection.

What you can do on InspectAhead

Each certification has its own section, with its own bank, its own progress and its own exam series. The account stays the same, so your dashboard and your history follow you from one section to the other.

How to choose your certification

Choose by the equipment you inspect, not by which exam looks easier. If your work order names a vessel, its inspection history and its next internal inspection, sit API 510. If it names a line number in a corrosion loop with a thickness survey, sit API 570.

Many inspectors hold both. The two banks overlap on general theory, metallurgy and inspection practice, but the code references, the calculations and the questions differ: preparing one does not prepare the other.

If you are choosing for a role you do not hold yet, check the employer requirement or the certification scheme first. The exam fee, the experience requirement and the renewal cycle all follow the certification, not the platform.

Where to start

Open the section that matches your exam and start with a practice set. Nothing is created until you answer, and the free trial needs no account.

If you are still deciding, read the scope of each certification above, then open the section you need. You can move between the two sections at any time from the footer of either one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate account for API 510 and API 570?

No. One InspectAhead account covers both sections. The bank, the exam series and the progress belong to the section you are in, so a running mock exam is never interrupted by a question from the other certification.

Does the API 510 section include mock exams?

Yes. The API 510 section runs full-length timed mocks in the closed-book and open-book split, shorter sessions for the days when a full sitting does not fit, and domain drills. Each series keeps its own progress.

Can I prepare for both certifications at the same time?

You can work on both, one session at a time. Open the section you want from the footer or the account menu; the platform keeps one certification on screen so the question, the timer and the debrief always belong to the same exam.

Is InspectAhead an official API product?

No. InspectAhead is independent exam preparation: original practice questions in the exam style, with explanations and a debrief by domain. API is a mark of the American Petroleum Institute and the exam itself is booked with API.
